With its cultural and breathtaking nature escapes, Portugal is Western Europe’s hidden gem.
Trip Overview
This 5-day journey, starting from Portugal’s vibrant capital, is the perfect blend of culture, relaxation, and adventure. Wander through sun-drenched streets lined with pastel buildings, sip espresso at lively cafés, shop in stylish boutiques, and experience a buzzing nightlife that keeps the country awake long after sunset.
Day 1: Arrive in Lisbon and Travel to the Algarve
Upon arriving in Lisbon, consider driving directly to your resort in the Algarve region. This approach allows you to finish the trip back in Lisbon, making your departure day more convenient. Once you arrive, take in the fresh sea air and coastal views, then enjoy a relaxing early dinner at your hotel.
Day 2: Relax on the Beach
Portugal’s beaches offer a stunning mix of sandy coves and dramatic cliffs. The Atlantic Ocean can be colder than expected, so swimming may be optional. Many beaches are located below cliffs and are accessed by long staircases. The coastline west of Lagos is more rugged and less developed, offering quieter spots with incredible views. Pack a picnic and spend the day enjoying the peaceful surroundings.
Day 3: Visit a Coastal Town
Explore one of the Algarve’s charming towns. Albufeira is vibrant and busy, filled with shops and nightlife. Lagos offers a more relaxed and scenic atmosphere with plenty of local shops selling ceramics, leather goods, and jewelry. There are also several smaller fishing villages to discover, such as Carvoeiro, Salema, Olhão, and Alvor. During the spring and summer, Sand City near Lagoa features impressive sand sculptures. Enjoy a fresh seafood meal in one of the many local restaurants.
Day 4: Return to Lisbon and Stroll Along the River
Spend the morning at the hotel before making the two to three hour drive back to Lisbon. Once in the city, stop by Zarzuela for pastries, including gluten-free options. Then enjoy a walk along the riverfront. A comfortable pair of shoes is recommended, as the streets are often hilly or paved with cobblestones. For dinner, head to Time Out Market. Arrive early to avoid the busiest hours.
Day 5: Take in Lisbon's History
Lisbon’s historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot. The city’s elevators provide a convenient way to reach the hilltop neighborhoods. A guided tuk-tuk tour is a great way to see the sights while covering more ground. Visit the 11th-century Castelo de São Jorge at the top of São Jorge hill for panoramic views and a glimpse into the city's past. Finish the day with dinner at Palácio Chiado, an elegant 18th-century palace offering a variety of dining options.
